King's research about company pages on Wikipedia has been featured in PR Week, Ragan, and CorpComms. His work about Wikipedia ethics was published in The International Association of Business Communicators, PR Squared (Shift Communications), and others.
Ethical Wiki's founder, David King, started editing Wikipedia pages for brands around 2008. At the time, he was working for a PR firm in Silicon Valley. He became the firm's Wikipedia "expert."
In 2011, David King quit his job and moved to the east coast. Before the plane even landed, marketing professionals familiar with King's Wikipedia know-how were contacting him for help. Ethical Wiki's first clients were secured over airplane wi-fi.
Ethical Wiki grew mostly through word-of-mouth. People struggling with Wikipedia often asked their professional network if they knew an expert. King also did volunteer work on Wikipedia. For example, he wrote the History of Public Relations page.
